Windows Hosting is costlier than Linux Web Hosting because of the proprietary software Windows Server use including Microsoft Windows while Linux servers run Linux variants, PHP, Apache etc all of which are open source.

Generally a normal static html web site works well on both. There is no specific point choosing Windows servers unless you really need some software or feature that is not provided in Linux Servers. For example, if you web site programmed in MS Dot Net, then you must buy Windows hosting whereas a php programmed site can easily operate in both Windows an Linux environment.

You need to see what you “need” and then choose the variant.

Web you buy web space, you actually buy (actually not buy, you rent it) physical space on a hard disk that is located on remote, powerful computer called Web Server. It is just like a normal computer, but with high end, power configuration like huge RAM, high speed internet link, 2 or more processors etc.

Just like your desktop pc, and Operating System is required to run this server, and based on what operating system is installed, we get the variants. So a linux web hosting server has a variant of linux installed on it (like RedHat, CentOs etc.) while a Windows web server has Microsoft Windows installed on it.

Windows servers are generally costly because as you know, Windows is a proprietary software while Linux is an open source. Further there are softwares that are required on Windows servers which again are proprietary while Linux servers ususally have open source softwares which makes them less costly comparing Windows.

Web Hosting is the process of “hosting” your files on the web. When you host your site on the web, you actually host it on a physical computer (often high end comuters called Servers) that might be located anywhere in the world and is connected to a network called Internet which makes it accessible to almost anyone around the globe.

Web hosting is often used in place of web space or internet space which actually refers to the “disk space” on a physical computer where you web site is being hosted.
